FOR
INSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRATIC REFORM
Date: Nov
25, 2016 (Friday)
Time: 5.30pm
to 7.30pm
Venue: KL Chinese Assembly Hall
Nov 19, 2016 saw the mass
movement of Malaysian citizens in yellow into the KL streets demanding for
institutional reform. It is estimated that over 40,000 Malaysians walked the
streets in peaceful demonstration. While there were many restrictions placed nonetheless, we saw a sizable multi ethnic Malaysian society participate.
What lessons can we learn
from Bersih5? Has Bersih5 enlarged the space for democratic peaceful
expressions?
From the way the citizens
showed support to the Bersih5 demands? And citizens peaceful action. The
global nature of Bersih demonstrations.
From the way Police and
enforcement responded? The lock down of inner KL city and dataran area? Professional
action? The arrest, raid on Bersih office and officials? The use of SOSMA in detaining Bersih Chairperson
Maria Chin.
From the way the politicians
have responded from both sides of the divide. From the ruling government and
from the opposition.
From the way media has portrayed
the event? Fair reflection and analysis –mainstream and social media.
From the way academics and public intellectuals have analysies Bersih5? What are their observations?
Proham is facilitating
the space for a discussion among various stakeholders concerning the Bersih5
movement with the view of providing an analysis based on the fundamental
liberties of the Federal Constitution (Article 10) and the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (Article 20).
The objective is to empower citizens
action for institutional reform, good governance and enhance parliamentary democracy
in Malaysian society
