Introducing PROHAM

The Association for the Promotion of Human Rights or PROHAM is established by former members of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and the Royal Police Commission. These members have fulfilled their official duties in various capacities in enhancing Human Rights in Malaysia and would like to continue to contribute in a voluntary capacity towards the promotion and understanding of Human Rights in Malaysia society.
PROHAM was registered on March 10, 2011 under the Registrar of Societies as Persatuan Promosi Hak Asasi Malaysia. It will operate as an independent and impartial human rights organization and will adhere to the principles as provided for in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
As an Association, PROHAM will work with all parties including the Government, civil society and private sector. PROHAM will operate in consistency with the principles and values established in the UDHR and other UN International Human Rights statutes and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

THE OBJECTIVES
To promote human rights among the people of Malaysia
To promote the rights of indigenous people and ethnic minorities
To engage with Government on the ratification of UN Human Rights instruments and treaties
To issue press statements and position papers on current human rights concerns and issues
To organise discussions on pressing human rights concerns
To undertake research on human rights concerns and issues
To work closely with Suhakam, civil society and private sector on matters pertaining to Human Rights
To submit recommendations to government and relevant organisations
To network with regional and international organisations in the promotion of Human Rights

MEMBERSHIP
There are five times of membership. Applications are made and approved by the PROHAM committee.
The first is ordinary membership which is open to former members of Suhakam and other commissions like the Police commission. Entry fee of RM500 and yearly of RM 120
The second is associate membership which is open to individuals who have experience in the work of human rights. Entry fee of RM500 and yearly fee of RM100
The third is associate corporate membership is open to private sector companies which are committed to human rights. Entry free of RM2,000 and yearly fee of RM1,000
The fourth is associate voluntary organization which is committed to human rights. Entry fee of RM500 and yearly fee of RM200
The fifth is honorary membership to a distinguish person for contribution to human rights. No fees
